I’m delighted that Gina Soldano interviewed me for her Why We Write series. As she mentions at the beginning of her post, Gina and I met through the 12 x 12 Picture Book Challenge. We’re also both members of SCBWI (the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators).

Gina is author of the children’s picture book Nia’s Rescue Box, which was published in October 2023 and illustrated by Abi Eaton.

Ashamed by her newfound food insecurity, Nia leaves a local food rescue with an empty box. Confronted with the reality of food waste, she accepts help and becomes part of a meaningful and responsible cycle of food production and usage. The illustrations are also “rescued” and recycled in that they are cleverly made from mixed media, such as newspaper, fabric scraps, brown paper, felt, and construction paper.

Thanks to Gina for allowing me to share about my writing journey, Sophia and Sinclair Get Lost!, self-publishing, and more.
